We started planting Christmas trees when we moved to our Rockwood farm in the Spring of 1997. Every year since then we have planted hundreds of new trees… spruce, fir and pine. Peter is a professional Forester and manages the Christmas Trees with expertise and care. In 2004 our first trees were ready to sell and we put our “Cut-Your-Own Christmas Tree” sign out on the road and hoped for the best.
That first Christmas 30 families came to cut trees, and we served hot cider to them in our little rickety lean-to. Many of the 2004 families still come for trees here as part of their Christmas tradition… and ours! Since we began, we have planted over 30,000 Christmas Trees on the farm.
Today the lean-to has been replaced by a beautiful timber-frame building we call the Shop……and many more families come to our farm for their Christmas trees! We provide saws for cutting the Christmas trees flagged in the field and have sleds to make it easier for people to bring their tree back.
For those who prefer pre-cuts, we offer Ontario-grown Fraser and Balsam Fir Christmas trees. We also sell wreaths and sturdy tree stands. We now use biodegradable netting for those who want to bail their trees. And we proudly belong to CFTO (Christmas tree farmers of Ontario).
But, much remains the same at Madeira Farms since we sold our first trees in 2004. The farm remains a beautiful place for a winter walk. The quiet cedar bush feels peaceful. We still put out the same old “Cut-Your-Own” sign and hope for snow. We still get excited when people come and when a family returns from the fields carrying their perfect tree.
